ok, I posted this question on the sa/ca side since this is my field of past experience but not sure there is a species that will fit this footprint that I would be interested in keeping. I have 30"Lx18"Dx24"H tank and I am looking for stocking ideas. I have never kept african cichlids but am super intrigued by calvus and compriceps. would they be viable for this tank? If so how would you stock it? Thanks.

HOB emperor 330 I think and undergravel filter with two powerheads running it. I think the tank is turning over 12 times in an hour maybe even a little more. I have a natural colored gravel substrate right now with a 3" gravel depth give or take and ceramic rings under the gravel. I also have ceramic biomedia in the HOB filter. I have a 6" flowerhorn in there now and never have above 2-3ppm nitrate doing weekly 50% water changes. he is a very messy eater so im thinking I should be good on filtration. (the flowerhorn is going away BTW) I have wood in there now and 5 medium to large rocks but could lose the wood and install more rock very easy.

The wood is okay for the Africans, they just need places to hide so that's why stacked rock is preferred. Your filtration sounds good. What colors are you thinking about getting? And what size fish do you prefer?

you could do calvus, compriceps,Julidochromis,Tanganyika Featherfins,Xenotilapia

I really like the idea of doing a altolamprologus only tank. how many and how would you stock within those parameters? If its even possible. I have no idea.

Due to the footprint of the tank I am thinking I will need to stay with smaller specimens. adult sizes in the 4-6" range. does this sound reasonable?

That doesn't sound to bad to me as long as you have hiding places for them. I would try it out if I was you. When you get them how big will they be? If they're juvenile get the number you want at the same time so that way they're not so aggressive. I would go with a number between 8 and 12 so maybe like 10 or 11 of them and try to keep it like 3 makes and the rest all female. You could get a synodontis too maybe
