Hello,
This weekend I am getting a 580gallon acrylic tank. The dimensions on this beast are 91"Lx36"Wx42"T with no overflow. That's actually about 590gallons but that really doesn't matter
The tank comes with a couple powerheads, and a, 200w Uv sterilizer which is great. Here's my thing, I'm trying to figure out which filtration I should do, I can't choose between an Ultima II 4000 or do a sump. I don't have a problem doing water changes, but who really wants to do it 25 percent water change on a 580gallon that's almost 4ft tall. that's just a lot of work. So if I do the Ultima II then I want to pump around 10x turnover, so minimum GPH must be around 5500GPH. Also sence the Ultima II has the backflow its easier to clean and maintain. But same with the sump, but the only thing with the sump is I'm going to have to bend down change the filter socks or filter pads let alone having to buy filter sock sand filter pads.
Ok so my question is:
What should I do for filtration on my 580gallon aquarium, the Ultima II 4000 with a pump pumping about 5800gph, or a sump with a 50 micron filter sock with a 5800gph pump?
Plus I also have the 200w UV sterilizer. So give me your guys's opinions please. I'm leaning towards the Ultima because the tank has no overflows, if I do a sump I will have to drill 1in thick acrylic. But with the Ultima, I can just plumb the intake very easily into the tank.
