5gal sitting sideways across tops of 2x4's?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Oh, the 2x4's are part of the stand for my 125g, so they aren't going to roll. I hope.

I don't see it as sappy, but I am a little taken aback at how many people (here and in real life) do think it is strange and wonder why I'm doing it. I guess it's like finding the girl you always wanted (and can have), finding out she lives in a wheelchair and not letting it stop you. It's not like I'm going all out, it's just a shelf. And he's amazing! Giant Betta! In my house! I feel like the lucky one in this deal. I really do. I fed him two baby earthworms today and he inhaled them so fast the camera barely caught it. He's a very healthy and vibrant fish, he just can't swim. Sure, his color is defective. Green bettas shouldn't have any red wash. But he's still my little monster.

yes, but only because we are not used to seeing this. doesn't mean the stands are not safe. but it illustrates the point that the manfacturers are telling the truth.

glass tanks only need end support.

if you tried this with an acrylic tank however, the tank would fold and you would have a big mess.

but not so with glass tanks.

there is a thread somewhere on cichlid forum that explains the physics behind why this is so, something about how the bottom glass panel acts as a girder and becomes extremely difficult to break.

Depends on the glass tank. I don't believe that "end only" support would work on glass tanks without the framing, such as glasscages brand tanks.

Good point, Bderek67. By framing are you thinking of the molding/bracing plastic rim at the top of the tank?

And here's some assurance for any who still doubt the vigor of this wondrous fish:
