t5's woulda been better by farrrrrrrrrrrr. nyways nice cab n hood.

Really, in what way?

To be honest, I wanted T5's when I started (from all the rave I heard), but after doing research I honestly didn't find much difference. In fact T8's seemed quite a bit cheaper, seemed to produce as many lumens or more, seemed to last longer, seemed to produce less heat, seemed to have more bulb options, and I could find them in more stores.

Here's the metrics I considered:

I needed about 18-24 bulbs, given for 2-3x on a 210gal. So that meant ordering a case of them. At the time and brands I looked at a case of (25) T8's 25w 36" was around $70 (6500k). A case of (25) T5's 21w 34" was around $170, currently that seems closer to $190 for 6500k. To me that was big difference given I would need to change these yearly or more frequently.

The lifetime rating of the T8's were nearly 24000 hours, whereas only 2/3rds of that for the T5s at 15000 hours. The lumens of the T8's (2250) seemed on par with the T5's (2100). The spectrums seemed nearly the same, including tri-phosphor. The wattage of the T5's was less, which I liked, but given the less lumens, I would need more bulbs anyway. The size of the T5's was nice, but I had plenty of room in the hood for 24 T8 bulbs, and I kind of feared breaking the thinner T5s when I held one in my hand.

In the end, I personally didn't see what I would be getting for 2-3x the price, in fact I saw more things I would be giving up (ie: more heat, less lifetime, less lumens, and harder to find). Although I'm still a newbie when it comes to lighting, so I probably completely overlooked something I should have compared in the research?

t8's are no where near as good for growing plants. t8's are good for lighting up a tank and grow shade loving plants. judging by the amount of bulbs you have you want to grow light loving plants and t5's are much more worthy investment. heres an easy way to put it. you could have got the same amount of lighting output with half as many t5's there fore reducing overall cost as you replace half as many bulbs

But I'm still struggling with why that's true?
Your data is ... Lumens and CRI, something else?

I only knew enough to consider Lumens, CRI, color, and price.
Here's the breakdown of the specs, with the best prices I could find:

T8 - Lumens 2250, CRI 86, 6500k, 25w, 36", $70/25 = $2.80 ea
T5 - Lumens 2100, CRI 85, 6500k, 21w, 34", $170/25 = $6.80 ea
T5HO - Lumens 3500, CRI 85, 6500k, 39w, 34", $190/25 = $7.60 ea

Using WyldFya post, awesome BTW, I figured I would aim for 250 LPG.
For my tank dims, that's around 39,000 total lumens, ie: 250(30*2+72+24)
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=73446

T8 - 39,000/2250 = 18 bulbs ~ $50
T5 - 39,000/2100 = 19 bulbs ~ $125
T5HO - 39,000/3500 = 11 bulbs ~ $85

So other than a space issue, I figured I was getting the better deal, same lumens, same color, same CRI, similar total wattage, much less heat, easier to find. What else should I have considered? Is intensity an issue? This isn't the last plated tank I'll have, in fact I'm still a newbie when it comes to plants, so I'd love to learn.
