for fish, definitely shoot in manual. and there's no better way to understand photography than to force yourself to shoot in manual.

dont use those little icon shooting modes, theyre worthless. i started in S and A modes, now everything i shoot is in manual mode, even everyday pics. afterall, that's the whole point of a DSLR :headbang2

in manual you need to tweak your shutter speed, aperture, and ISO to get the right exposure. given that you dont have a speedlight right now, your limited to low shutter speeds, high ISO, and wide apertures, which doesnt always result in the best photo.

and you also need to adjust your white balance, but this is easily fixed in post processcing
I agree with this. I use always use macro and auto setting, but now I'm learning to use A and S mode and the other manual modes

yea i didnt really notice much of a difference with the macro setting :irked:

I almost always shoot aperture priority. Shutter speed is irrelevant most times, as long as you're hitting above 1/60, you should be able to freeze the fish and not get motion blur.

Honestly though, my aperture is usually wide open to allow more light in because I never bother with a flash. I haven't used my flash in years. Perhaps I should break it out. I think I do ok with ambient lighting though:

I'd highly recommend getting fixed lens with a wide aperture, like a 50mm f/1.8 or something. The 50mm canon lens is around $90 new, not sure what the nikon variety would be.

I also only shoot in raw and convert and do all editing in Adobe Lightroom. Let me know if you'd like a copy. I can send one over to ya. It's a great program.

I like the nikon 50mm f1.8. Really cheap, sharp and fast lens. One of my favorite lens so far.

Hey Ed, it that the biggest mono I gave to you? She is looking GOOD.
