6.5g emersed start

I see it on eBay and aqua bid all the time. Ive seen the most gorgeous backgrounds made from that and plastic mesh, I was thinking about doing it but found the right size right texture background and it looks nice instantly, I might look into a few diff mosses... Especially if this hc doesn't work out. So far doesn't look and diff, and I can see tiny bubbles on it so I'm guessing I didn't kill it yet....

Good to hear... I'll see if i can find the names of some of the mosses when im in fish street...

That is called Fissidien Fontanus a great little moss. Personally I would drain that puddle and grow fully emersed. Like posted above, place plastic wrap over the top to keep the humidity high. To make the carpet grow in quicker break the clumps into very small clusters of 4-6 plants and spread them out. It may take tweezers to make it work.

As for the heater you will want a fully submersable aquarium filter. If your concerned about the asthetics you can buy an inline heater. heating via a heating pad is going to be inefficient through the substrate and probably won't effect the water temp without first killing the delicate HC roots.

Just my two cents. Regardless you're still off to a great start.

Well the heater stays at 100 degrees, and I've checked water and soil n they are staying around 80. I'm really trying this because I haven't bought co2 yet, and I figured if a lot of hc float or melt when filled up after, maybe if they grow part submerged they might b more used to being underwater? Idk I'm sure I'll have to try a few times lol. Just curious, they sell pads of that moss, can I just cut to fit and do instant carpet?

The fissidien can be hard to use on the substrate. It really likes to attach to a hard surface or wire mesh. A really cool thing about the stuff is you can grind it up and smear the "paste" on whatever you want to attach it to. Then grow it emersed in a high humidity environment. In a week or so it will be attached and start covering whatever it is you put it on. Check out the link below, very interesting technique.

Very interesting. I was afraid to break up the hc cuz I thought I'd kill it, only question, will it grow into the droopy moss if grinded? Almost looks like a diff kind of moss, but I'm def not a plant guy, keep the tips coming! I thought I was really limited on carpet, but it looks like if ground up it may make a nice carpet. Only downside I kinda want the rocks bare, and it seems like most mosses will attach to rocks better than substrate? I think I have a lot to learn lol

K looked closer, didn't realize the moss was so small, I've only seen it on eBay and they must use a macro lens to take those pics lol.

Yeah, its a tiny moss, So dont be fooled by the pics ;)

Moss is hard to use as a carpet, unless you attach it first to a flat rock or wire mesh. You can buy stainless steel mesh for this purpose but it is not cheap.

I'm not saying it can't be done but if you try attaching the moss to something like sand you will want to pull out your hair as you watch it fly around your tank.
