6 bichirs died yesterday...... huhuhuhuu

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
wow. yeah try to investigate what happened before the new fish arrive.
sorry man, losing one is a bummer but losing 6 is a tragedy

I don't know what you have been doing wrong, but it must have been something really bad. I keep bichirs for 15years now (my oldest P.ornatipinnis female is over 30 years old) and I didn't loose one single fish yet. They are very hardy and they get very old. I've got 6 P.senegalus, 8 P.ornatipinnis, 4 P.delhezi, 3 P.palmas, 5 P.lapradei, 2 P.bichir, 5 Ropefish, most of them over 10 years in my tanks. To find out what went wrong you have to answer the usual questions: how big is your tank, what filtration system do you use, what and how often did you feed, did you use chlorinated water from the tap, how was the water temperature, did you control them for parasites (little "hair" on the scales), etc....???

I agree! I got my first bichir back in 1968 and have only lost three over all the years. Two jumped out of their tanks and were dead before I noticed, and one got stuck up an intake filter tube, and drowned! But never to illness or tank conditions. Please search out your problem and fix it, before you continue to add more fish to an already unhealthy tank. IMHO Johnathan

wow, mind to share some photo of your bichirs?

thanks for the advice(s). atleast my other bichirs are doing fine... i hope someday i could be like the others who have completed their bichir collections.

So... Are you gonna tell us what actually happened? Was it water parameters? Tank size? Were there other fish in the tank that survived/died? Did you ever figure it out? That is quite a loss and we'd all like to learn from it I think.

Is it possible that some other toxin found its way into the tank, like bleach or something? How did the fish look when they were dead? Sometimes you can tell if a fish died from "shock" cause they look shocked, in which case it could have been anything that would have resembled a drastic change in the tank (temperature, parameters, toxins, etc) or if they looked kinda peaceful, or ripped up, it was probably comething else.

Sorry to hear that and agree with mcblack too. There must be something wrong.. may not yours.. all sp. of my friend 's tank were gone after his little bros. rinse some dish cleaning formulas to clean the tank.. if you know what happen, please share.. and let that teach us:)
