6 foot tank, what to stock?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
ye they are very nice, the ones in the shop are a bit chunkier, deeper bodied, nice size of about 9-10 inches. im guessing they chunky up as they grow bigger like balas do. the goldies are going into a pond today, so il be looking out for any other fish i like the look of to go in with these 2. i know they have a huge ornate bichir in there, around 14-16 inches long, but hes too expensive anyway, but id love to have him! will have to see what else they have.

Oh man! you should have stocked it with apistogrammas!!! that would have been SWEEET

well it turned out the lfs has mislabled them, and they are in fact lemon-fin barbs, they are also much bigger than i remembered at around 14 inchs long. they are in with a mozambique mouth brooder who was also awaiting a new bigger home. the tank looks great with the 3 of them in there, and they are settling in fine. the 2 lemons got a bit battered and bruised while being caught but its all superficial and will heal easily. i think with the 2 lemon-fins and the mouth brooder at around 10 inches, the tank is fully stocked, what do you guys think? oh and thanks for the opinions posted x

Woah! Lemon fins normally only get to 22 cm / 11'' =D you have some real monsters!

I think some severums an eel and a hell of alot of catfishes would make your tank SWEET!

Don't let people scare you off of keeping goldfish in warm water. I do it, and some of the higher end keepers/books on the subject actually recommend the temp at 78 degrees, with 7.6 ph to be optimal. The key is to make sure the water has enough disolved oxygen. And treat these fish like any other fish that gets as big as goldfish do. The reason it is said they can't go in warm water, is because it's much easier from a petstores point of view. Rather than explain why the 20 gallon tank can't hold goldfish, neon tetras, a rainbow shark and a betta.

Pond comets and the like will stalk and try to eat smaller fish than them. Ornamental goldfish will also try, but are such clumsy swimmers that they usually can't catch anything.

You'll be fine with goldfish at 78 degrees if you treat them like fish and not like goldfish. A standard goldfish will be like a tinfoil barb in length when it's grown. They eat just as much as a tinfoil barb. If you keep up on water changes/correct filtration as you would for any other fish that is 12inches + you'll do just fine.

Most people who do practice keeping goldfish at warm temps, don't talk about it much, because the amount of posts that happen after they attempt to talk about it. Alot of people speak from someone elses experiences, not their own.

I think most people can agree, if you take care of it correctly, just as you would any other "tropical fish" it'll be just as healthy. Just remember as temperature rises, less disolved oxygen is in the water. So be prepared for the hot days etc in an aquarium, as you should be with any fish.

I recommend either A, keeping only goldfish in the tank, or mixing it with only passive fish that are larger than the full grown goldfish's mouth. Lots of goldfish and koi are wintered in aquariums over the winter season.

well my goldies were causing a lot of strife, and fought and even started bullyign each other to the point they killed one of their tank mates, after weeks of trying to find out why it turned out that the heat of the tank could have been a stressor and was leading to bickering or fighting, either way, they are now out, and in a storgae box awaiting their new home, the fnacies will be going into my bedroom in a 30-50 gallon, the comets will be going into a pond, i just couldnt part with them! the guys in the big tank, the 2 lemon fins (1 about 14/15 inches and 1 about 12/13 inches) and the 1 male mouth brooder who is about 10/12 inches seem to be settling in fine. would you say this tank is now fully stocked? its 6 x 2 x 2, but i have no idea if these guys have mroe growing to do as all info i find on them is conflicting, ive found info saying lemon-fins grow from anywhere between 6 inches fully grown to 18 inches fully grown, as mine are already so big im tending to keep towards the larger estimates! its just ive seen some gorgeous little oscars, and ive never really taken much interest in them, but these were really pretty and followed my hands where ever they were on the tank. if i did get one, it would just be the single oscar, then the 3 fish that are in there (my friend wants me to take her 6 inch rainbow shark but im not sure if it may get eaten) i just dont know whether to leave the 3 as they are and maybe get my friends rainbow. oh and just so you know, i will never be able to up-grade the tank, this is as big as i can go.

Neon tetras would be cool. I would but a gar in it but it would probally eat the other fish. =(
