6 foot tank with sump or canister filter

Hey everybody. I'm new to the thread. I have a 300 gallon tank with built in overflows. Currently I'm running an fx5 plus a small magnum on one of the overflows. I plan on increasing the amount of ciclids in my tank and so was going to hook up a 30 gallon sump and do away with the magnum. The sump came with the tank and is structured for a refugium, but I've heard that for freshwater it's better to go dry. Any thoughts?

I have decided that I am going to get a custom built 4 foot sump and am going to use:
Pot Scrubbies as bio media, polyfiber as mecanical, chuck a uv lamp in somehwhere aswell and possibly upgrade my pump
I plan to put in around 400 scrubbies that are fed by a drip tray.
