6 gallon betta comm: rescaped

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
At first I liked the red gravel but the mix is growing on me.

I see a few problems in your tank though. First of all size, for 4 bettas a 6 gallon is just fine but once you start adding more fish it can get crowded fast. If I where you, I'd put the loach, glass cats, and tetra in a seperate tank. In another thread I saw that you wanted to spawn your bettas, it would be easiest to spawn them without tankmates so having just the bettas (and maybe a dither fish) would be best. But, if your not having problems with amonia or nitrate I think the fish will continue to thrive.

The second is that your loach, glass cats, and tetra all should be kept in schools of at least 3, prefferabely 6. But as you probably know, 6 glass cats, 6 loaches, and 6 tetras would not do well in a 6 gallon for long. The loach also needs at least a 10 gallon tank. Loaches swim allot -as you've probably noticed- so they need lots of room. Especially when keeping multiple loaches wich you might end up needing to do.

I'm also 12 and I know how hard it can sometimes be to have people say bad things about your tank especially when you've put allot of work into it (wich I'm sure you have). But anyway, I love the tank, I love that you started out in the hobby at such a young age, and I wish you best of luck with your tank.
indeed I thank you. believe it or not this is my seventh year of fishkeeping, started with hoarding bettas in jars. to cope with bioload I am heavily filtering and planting, and the stocking issue is being addressed and once a bigger tank is up Ill get more fish for the schooling ones. unfortunately the tetra is no more, the three female bettas ganged up on it and killed it and ate it, I posted a pic on the dead fish thread. I am fully aware of this strocking issue and it is one of my priorities to sort it out, and I have some smaller breeding tubs to breed the fish in and raise the fry in. breeding has to wait as my male has got fin rot. thanks for commenting and thanks for your concerns.

Roflmao, you can't claim credit for your parents doing all the work when you were 5! What'd you do? Pick out decor and feed em when your parents told you to?

I took care of a 500gal koi pond when I was 6 I would swim to the bottom clean the hoses/filters clear any clogs and feed/care for the fish... At 5 he could have been doing much more than just feeding and picking gravel

you guys call it fish keeping, i call it your chore.

i'm sorry, but helping your parents doesn't qualify as fish keeping to me. Sure it gave you some experience of being around and handling fish but let's not pretend your parents finger prints aren't all over it. Way different then doing everything yourself.

i have an 8 year old who loves her fish and takes care of them too......but truth is I'M guiding her much like you 2 were guided at that age

i feel bad for the loach i bet he wants a bigger tank and a school i hope you get that upgrade in the very near future. the glass cats and yoyo loach should be in atleast a 20 gallon and that's pushing it. i would go for a tank of atleast 36x12x12 inches

the male seems to have a bad case of fin rot, so he is currently under quarantineView attachment 961459View attachment 961460

That doesn't look like fin rot, looks like someone or something got ahold of his fins and shredded it. I would suspect the loach or the Female bettas. Put the male in a clear container and post pictures of his side for a more accurate diagnosis. Either way, treat with bettafix, prime, salt, and frequent water changes. Some methyline blue would hurt to prevent further infection.

It's funny because I never had a parent touch that pond I was given the pumps from an older pond but I did everything myself or with my other brother, we dug the hole and put a huge tarp inside added all the koi we built the waterfall and laid rocks down around the entire thing, parents didn't want anything to do with my fish at all, they would rather eat them than help. But yeah kids can do a lot more than just picking fish/decor at that age, just saying
