No doubt that C. dimerus from Bella Union is my favorite fish... something about the acara shape and pretty but understated coloration that makes me want to keep them.
Here are some pics of an absolutely gorgeous one from my last trip to Uruguay (earlier this year). I still have a couple of pairs of the Bella Union from earlier trips so I brought back some C. dimerus from Zanja Honda and Rio Tacuarembo (Ansina) this last trip...
I don't think I've ever kept a cichlasoma but see them as great aquarium fish, nicely patterned, compact not crazy aggressive and can be kept in moderate size aquariums.....
I don't consider it a derail, I like any discussion about the less talked about cichlids on the site.
I caught some shots this morning with a couple of the smaller siblings.
my guess is the large one is male, and the others in the shots, female
Duanes,
I agree, although I enjoy reading threads about the more commonly kept species, it is nice to once in a while read about peoples experiences with the rarer (in the hobby at least) ones. Your Bella Unions are looking like they are going to grow into really stunning adults.
Matt,
I have the same feeling about these swimming eggs, I just have to have them in my tanks, even if it means not having room for the more colorful species. Wow, that really is a nice Cichlasoma you have pictured. Which local is that one from? Let me know if you ever get any fry from any of your Uruguayan Cichlasoma. I'd definitely be interested in purchasing some from you to add to my Cichlasoma collection.
