6 More baby rays!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
1 inch......that is amazing. btw how big are the parents?

I'll try to get a camera today. The smallest ray (1") seems to be getting death curl. I was afraid that might happen as she's so small and probably underdeveloped. I raised the temp a bit (82 F) and will do a 50% water change and hope for the best. The others are doing alright so far, swimming around smoothly on the bottom with the edge of their disks staying down on the glass. I have begun feeding black worms to the first two baby rays from 3 months ago so there is food in the tank when the new ones decide to start eating.

The parents are (about) 13" across for the female and 11" across for the male. This is their second liter.

maybe they were premature because of the combination of the mom being on the small side, and the large litter size. How were you feeding the mom? Stuffing her full or just letting her have a few snacks multiple times a day. There was another member here who changed his feeding and it seemed like his litter lasted quite a long amount of time before birth. It would be interesting to see if maybe changing the moms feeding habits next time might help her/you out. Good luck, and hope they pull through!

I feed the parents twice a day, when I get up to go to work (6:30 A.M.) and when I get back home (5:00). I guess I could give smaller feedings and do a third one at night. I tried feeding the parents this morning but they refused to eat. They did this the last time for a few days after the birth.

The babies still have their yolk sacks so they must have been born the night before I moved them. They seem to be doing well and the 1" ray is hanging in there.

how big are the yolk sacs? Hope they all make it, but 1" is super small for motoros, i have heard of hystrix being at the smallest of 2"

waiting for pix :)

Sorry, no pix until I can get a hold of a camera.

All the rays are doing well, though the tiny ones are getting a little skinny. It's hard to tell whether they are eating the black worms or not. What else can I feed such tiny rays? Would they eat frozen daphnia?

I got the camera from school and took some pictures but I can't upload them until I get back to school. I have been out for the past few days due to spring flooding (flooded highway, washed out back roads, evacuated homes). Luckily I live in a small town 35 miles away where it is relatively dry (some back roads still washed out).
