my guess is that they are just prone to abnormal growth at a young age . Since they aren't in a small tank so they are not stunted , and water quality had been pretty stable and clean, and other fish in the tank ( the clown loaches) are happier than ever. Not exactly sure.
All i know is, there are people who will appreciate these special cases more than I do and hope they go to a better home
