Hey there everyone,

I've bought a thin bar about about 9 months ago. I kinda want another datnoid. My thinbar, although stable, is still very shy and I don't see him as much as I want to. I've been bitten by the datnoid bug, so I would like to add an IT to the tank. I've did a bit of reading and lots say that either have 1 tiger or many. So I'm affraid to add just one, but one more is all i really want since I have other tank mates in there. I've also read that it's ok to add another tiger if they arent relatively the same size. Now I'm wondering which statement to listen to and what to do. I have a 125 gallon with 2 bichers, 4 tinfoil barbs, 1 thin bar, and 2 parrots.

my questions are:
will it work? given a 6" thinbar and a 2.5" IT. there will be hiding spots for the IT, even though I hear they are hardly and can handle their own

will I be potentially harming the stability of the thinbar? i really like his colors. and i've never seen him unstable, even while in the bag. if the IT is gonna disturb that, then I wouldnt even bother.

thanks in advance. Cheer MFK community!

Datnoids will tolerate any other dat of any size. They will show initial agression just to show who's the boss but after a day, the smaller dat should be fine. There will always be the occassional chasing around but nothing like too much agression.

Also, I think NTT are the least agressive dats based on my own experience. They tend to just cruise all over and just hide when they feel like it. When its feeding time though, its a different story. If a datnoid is already stable, it will be hard to make it unstable again unless it feels like it.

I say go ahead and add the IT. The NTT will show him who's boss and be done and over with the little guy.

thanks guys for your responses.

If ITs are the aggressive ones, then what happens if i add another NTT instead? same results right? maybe less aggression overall? I see a nice NTT at my LFS. Not really sure though since I already have one. But if it would help in the long run instead of an IT, I might consider.

Hope to hear from you guys

Dats tend to be less aggressive to other species of Dats.
Dats also tend to be less aggressive when the pair are of different sizes. (the bigger the difference, the less chance for aggression).
So the Indo should be fine, for a good while atleast.

As far as adding another NTT. There is a better chance of aggression because they are the same spcies, but because Thin Bars are the most timid of the Dat species it wouldn't be as bad as say 2 IT's or 2 NGT's. Also, if there is a decent size difference that would help as well.

As far as stablity... you never know with Dats.

^ I agree. But sometimes those little indos end up being the bull! LOL!

Definitely agree with this!!! I have seen my 6" IT nip at my 11" ST once in a while.

Get as much dats as you can prophet. Don't worry about aggression. The more dats you got, the less aggression and before you know it, you'll be hoarding them as well...

thanks again for your opinion guys.

TC, if you were in my shoes, and you had a 6" NTT, what would you do? get a 2.5" IT, a 2.5" NTT, or wait it out a little bit and let the first one grow to gain a bigger size difference?

arkmann, I understand that the more I have, the less aggression there would be. But with my 120 gallon, I dont think its a good idea to have more than 2 since I'm planning to have other fish in it. I'd like to get a bigger tank in the future, but as of right now, it doesnt fit my budget. =/ thanks for the recommendation though. and wow, you have a brave IT. hope mine doesnt do that if i decide to get one

anyone else wanna give an opinion?

I personally would get the NTT (I like them better then IT).

They are the most timid Dat.
There will be a decent size difference, and by the time they get closer in size they should be use to each other a bit
You have a decent size tank.
All those factors will help with any aggression.

Also IT can get 18" while the NTT stays around 12" so if your worried about overstocking the tank because of other tank mates, the smaller one would be the best bet.

yeah I like NTT too. but 2 NTTs = Hiders?. Are ITs more active than NTT? I was considering something else besides NTT cause I dont like how my 6 incher hides so much. =/ any thoughts?
