6 Uarus Oh boy!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Once you get the level below 10, check it every day and just see how long it takes to creep back up. I would try to keep it 20 or below. It's going to depend on the number of fish and the amount you feed. When we have discussions here on MFK about suitable tank size, people only seem to take the size of fish versus tank into consideration. You can obviously raise out a group of Uaru to 6"+ in a 55 but if you're changing 75% of the water daily to keep them in good condition, it just seems like it'd be easier to upgrade.

I completely understand. I can see this will be alot of extra work. The sooner i can upgrade the better.

My partner in crime wants to see if he can fix the crazing on the 125 acrylic and then build a stand. Its a sharp tank. 5-6ft long. I say let's just get one and set it up. But u "guys" like fixing and making stuff lol.

Ill test the water again tomorrow. Im feeling the urge to do another wc. I feed them 2x a day. Pellets flakes and spinach 1 a day. Peas once a week. Bloodworm once a week. I was thinking of cutting down to once a day feedings but i have a lone apisto. I don't want them to be tempted to eat her.

Uaru will eat any time of the day as many times as you feed them. They love food. ;) Jeff Rapps usually refers to them as "aquatic goats" on his price list and he's right about that -- not only do they eat everything, protein or veggie, that gets thrown at them, but they will also bite/gnaw on driftwood and chew the sponges on your filters. They like to mess with everything.

I have a 150 gallon tank that I bought several years ago. It needed to be resealed and I thought I'd gotten a steal because it cost me $200 for the glass tank and stand. They are still sitting in my garage. So I have no patience for cleaning up and repairing old tanks, I guess. I usually end up breaking down and buying new ones. Keep your eye on Craigslist -- every now and then you find a great deal on a like-new tank. My 210 gallon tank came from a guy in Orlando who was contracted by Disney to set up a few show tanks for a Finding Nemo release party when the movie came out. The tanks had fish in them for four days, then when the show was over Disney told him he could just keep all the tanks and equipment they'd bought. He sold it to me for $400 which is about half the price of a new Aqueon 210 gallon tank with built-in overflows. Those types of deals are few and far between but they're definitely out there!

Water goats indeed!! I fed them peas lastnight. This morning just pellets. They kept looking at me like "hey lady wheres the rest!" lol. They where bullying eachother trying to get what dropped. I tossed in some spinach to keep them busy.

Thats funny about the " good deal". I am not patient. I just want the tank! I did find some good deals on craigslist. But the arylic was free and its so nice! If im.doing daily 75% wcs it will drive me nuts lol. Water is free but not what i want to be doing everyday after work! Lol

Uaru love to pick at Romaine lettuce. You may also try that as a snack to keep them occupied. I buy the whole heads of Romaine, then rip off entire leaves and stick them in the tank upside down, closing the white stalky part in the lid to hold it in place. They will strip off all the green and leave you only the white stalk to remove later.

Daily water changes are definitely a pain but I'm a discus keeper so I'm used to them. lol

I started out with a few zebra's in a 20 gallon had no idea what they were . . A acquaintance was throwing them in the garbage .. it was a party ! I brought them home in a 2 litre wine cooler bottle. . I put them in with neon tetra's never less to say the tetra's were gone in a few days and my obsession with cichlids exploded !! I now have a kraussi , three beautiful jags . a Cuban, two Dempsey's , breeding pair of large spot paratilapia, one small spot paratilapia and a festae and three tanks . I now have to upgrade my housing so I can get another larger tank ! Those will turn into many !
