ok heres the deal i have a 60 gallon tall tank with a FH in it, im going to sell it very soon as im getting bored with her and i like my front, GT, and i want a salt tank :) now would someone be able to give me all the info i need to start a tank like this up? would canister filters work or do i need a sump? also i want to just stack lots of live rock to the top of the tank and fill it with soft and hard corals here and there, with a crushed coral substrate, will also want to put a lion fish in there.. and last but not least i will most likely need a protein skimmer due to all the live rock right?

im also wondering what other fish could be kept with a lion fish, im fine with leaving it alone but if i can add a few more to give the tank more colour i wouldnt mind, ive been wanting to start a SW tank for some time now but never had the courage to go forward and actually start it because im afraid of a huge fail lol

you don't need a protien skimmer for rock but for waste from big fishes. live rock will provide some filtration to your tank. live sand will work best for what you want but you will have to choose between reef or lionfish.

you could try a dwarf lionfish cuz a regular one gets pretty large

thanks for the info, anymore input to this?

just make sure you take care of your tank, if you think "oh, it's fine how it is." it usually isn't it will take a bit for it to stabilize itself. make sure you keep tests up and know how to remedy whatever ails your tank

again thank you :)
so i cant even put hard corals into the tank with the lion?

From what I've read you can put any lion into a 50gal, volitan, radiata, Russell's etc, so a 60gal tall should be ok assuming enough swim room . With just a lion, there is no reason why you couldn't have a reef, the only problem is that they will eat any shrimp and the occational custation you add, but from what I've read they usually leave corals alone, though I have never had one in a reef, my friend MR.Reef24 would probably be able to tell you better as to what you can put in with them coral wise.

oops apologies i thought they were coral nippers. kevin knows lol
