thing to remember is that tempered glass will only bow about 1/2 it's thickness before it shatters, while plate glass will bow approximately it's entire thickness.
Also i'd highly recommend buying low iron glass, I have 5/8 reguler plate on my tank and there is noticeble distortion looking thru the glass at the fish, always wished i'd have forked oput the bit extra.
