I created a gasket between the window and the rubber lining.

Yep thats exactly what I did... The main viewing panel is situated outside of the liner while I have 6" wide acrylic frame on the inside of the liner. I then bolted and glued(so the water doesn't some into contact with the metal) the frame to the viewing panel with the liner pancaked in between to create a water tight seal.

I used a rubber pond liner, I believe it is made by Firestone.
