600 gallon stock list. Overstocked or not?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You will be fine. I have double the fish in a 750g ranging from 14"-28" and only running 180g sump loaded with media and running a bit less than 10x turnover rate. I do have auto changer though and feed every other day.

THATS A MONSTER

Ya it's massive. I'll post more close up pics of the tank in the next couple of days. It's arriving to my cousins house tomorrow from delivery. Storing it in his garage for now til spring cuz I'm still in the east coast for work.

Wow got any pics of your setup? I also found out some more specs on the media. For bio it has 40 gallons of Bioballs and 50L of ceramic rings that my system came with. Plus the UltimaII 2000 canister filter. So for bio filtration it should be more then enough and I will doing a auto drip system with this setup.

When I helped move that tank into Bret's house, I didn't think that it would be moving out so soon. lol

Ironic part is that he originally bought it off a guy in Van.

As far as stocking ........... if you plan on keeping rays then I would personally leave the rtc & paroon out of the mix as they could potentially outcompete the rays at feeding time. Tigs are much slower & have poor eyesight so IMO a tig would make a better mix with rays. You can try a gar but with only 1 fish that has the same elongated body shape as a super red, chances are pretty good that your aro will single it out & constantly harrass it. I would also leave the driftwwod out, once those rays gain some size they'll just knock it around like toothpicks anyway, and in that acrylic tank it's a pain in the azz to get in there & move, or remove later.

Your call, just adding my 2 cents worth. 600 gallons seems like such a HUGE tank, until you start adding some large predatory fish.

Good luck with your new tank, I enjoyed it while it was here in RD. :)

Thanks for the advice Neil. Ya I was shocked Bret got out of the hobby all of a sudden. I bought his set up last month (paid for and everything) and this winter weather has delayed the delivery til now...Finally though its arriving tomorrow:). Anyhow I might rethink about the rays as I like the Short bodies more and they are rare. I raised brown rays before and they were alot of work and costs loads to feed them, but if I can't find them short body catfish then I will settle for the Tigrinus and the rays. So it's one or the other for me. I had a Florida Gar with my crossback gold Aro in my old 450g and had no problems with them being together. I think it depends on how aggressive the Aro is.

I was rather shocked myself. Gars can work, Bret had one years ago but it was when he had his comm tank going with several aros so things balanced out. (most of the time) It never hurts to try, and as you said it will ultimately depend on the aro. It seems to me that the nicest red aros are always very aggro, so good luck with that. :)

Ya thanks again. If it doesn't work I'll have a flat down 160 gallon(72x24x20) set up as a grow out tank and the gar can go in there. Or I'll just sell it to a good home:)
