I have breeding pairs of carpintis "Escondido" and Cuban cichlids. I also have an F1 11-12" umbie, 5" male dovii, 6" male rtm. All were housed in their own 75 gallon tanks, and all would destroy anything I put in their tanks. Last month I got rid of those 5 tanks and dumped them all in a 8'x4'x2.5' 600 gallon tank and other than some ripped fins, they have all been fine. In fact, the umbie has gone from being my most aggressive fish to the most mellow in the tank. The cuban remains very aggressive :(.
I never thought I could have a central/south american adult community tank. here are some pics, more to come when my baby goes to sleep so I can escape to take a few better pics.

Nice tank. How are the overhead canisters working out for you? I tried that before and experienced much slower flow rate. Have you noticed the same?

I havnt. But they probably should be lower than the tank. Dont know if that works the motor harder. Until I jimmy rig them with longer tubes, they will remain above.

Just wondering. I had a really hard time priming the pumps, too.

Im running fx5's on the 600 gallon, but next to that is a 360 gallon running on fluval 405's. Now those are a pain to prime, but I found that if I filled the intake tube with water before turing it on, it started much quicker. wheather above or below the tank.

Well they all get along in habitat don't they. If they've all got room to have their own territories then they should co-exist in peace, although I think considering the max size of the dovii and umbee and their reputation for aggressiveness you may have problems later on. Even if it doesn't work out in the end you should see good growth on them in a tank that size.

territories! the cubans and the carpintis are only concerned about keeping the other pair out of their half of the tank. But they only stay at the bottom. The umbie, rtm, and dovii roam all 8 ft but only the top half. The only aggression occurs when these boundries are broken of course.

Herichthys carpintis Escondido race. I bought him and his wife from Rapps 2 years ago. Incorrectly called texas cichlid or green texas cichlid. The common name, texas cichlid really only belongs to cyanoguttatus
