610 gallon stock tub for rays

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have one of the 600 gallon 8 foot pools. I bought it for my dogs for hot days. They are 24" high to the top which means the running height would be closer to 18 to 20". A little too short for breeding. A company out of Florida makes fish tubs that would work much better. The name is aquatic Eco systems.

Yeah, I saw their site. Not exactly cheap though. Was looking for something a little cheaper and closer by me. The tubs in question ship from iowa and my gf's parents are from there so it would be easy to pick up on the way back from visiting next spring. Hmmm....thanks for the info though. Are they sturdy at least? It says it weighs 95 lbs. On their site. Got some thinking to do.

Check out the other thread I linked in the DIY section. Basically I would make a stand over it and put 2 55 gallon plastic drums on the stand. I would fill them with scrubbies or some kind of media for the bb and hook a pump up to it to get the water flowing through it. Would still have to clean it of.course. Would this be enough filtration with a large enough pump?

That idea on filters are perfect!! Seen that exact method of filters used in rays farms. Make sure u have some mechanical filtration .

I thought I was crazy for even thinking of such a way to filtrate it. Guess not! Not sure how I would do mechanical filtration in something so huge(this tub or something else big). That can be figured out later though

Think of this way of filtration as one big trickle tower. At the top put a layer of not to dense foam. And fill the rest with ur choice of media. Pretty basic but works well. Good luck

The water drum filtration is a very simple, budget friendly and it works!

Similar to the Overhead filters used over here due to space constraints as well as ponds.

Well after thinking a bit more and everything the 8 foot tub wouldn't even fit through a standard door frame. So not sure how I would get it down to the basement. I was thinking though why not build a wooden frame and put a pond liner in it.

What's the chance that they will stab through it? Idk how thick these things come, but if it worked I could get the 3 foot height and still go 8 feet long by 4 foot wide or something for the main breeding tank. I could even double up on liner and keep one slacked so if it did get punctured I would get at least a chance to fix it in time. Any opinions who have used liners?

if you wanted to do a smaller ray, like the smaller marble variants than you could get by with the pond you were thinking of originally and the filtration sounds pretty awesome

I'd rather stick with plain motoro. Their easy to breed. Fairly hardy compared to some other types. A great beginner ray for someone who wants to start with a ray. Cheap for the buyer, most would rather buy a $50-100 motoro than a $500 black pup and it dies in a week. I think for now motoro sounds good to me. I've thought of some other ways to get the beginner stingray keeper to try me out when I open up shop too. A worm kit with everything to breed and raise your own for the rays. Along with proven pairs of convicts to breed and provide as feeders. Lots of ideas are flowing and would work.
