I'd put maybe a
Pair of Giant Gourami with fast dithers
Or
Some Blue Dolphins, clown loaches

Just depends on what he likes the ideas are endless!
 
I like argentea personally. They can be aggressive though. I would get a school of SDs established in the tank and then introduce a group of juvenile vieja and see how they do. Maybe you will get a pair.
 
I like the idea of a pair of giant gouramis in there, I don't know how much space they require though come to think of it I think the tank would be a little too small for a pair, I'm probably wrong though, Am I guys?

Well his tank is a little over 2 foot wide, I honestly would try but I HAVE the ability to upgrade if needed I don't know for life but I would say a tank that size would get him for a long time

Some can be mean.. I bet anything it was raised in a tank alone so that explains his anger!! I've seen some that are complete gentle giants! BUT they are the MAIN fish... You can't add a Midas or something that would also want to be pushy with it only fish that will back down//or not even cause a fight in the first place.
