A pair of giant gourami would be to big for that tank. I wouldn't even put in one unless you get a red tail because they don't get as big as the others.

Your question is to vague really, need to narrow it down some such as: african, central or south american, fresh or salt and I could go on and on. The best thing might be for you to list fish you like and let the community tell you what might and might not go together.

Also are you wanting a community style, wet pet, pair or a single large with dithers?

Sorry I should have been more clear. He would prefer a community as he already has a butti as a wet pet. If it were me personally I would prob try and get a male honduran Jag then see what I could fit around that. I have a female Trimac which is currently around 5" which I could give him or a female dovii of around the same size however I dont really know if they would tolerate any tank mates when fully grown.

Update. Hes bought a large bifa and syn so whatever he gets should be based round them. I think he should get 2 or 3 nics
