65 gallon stocking

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hello all,

I'm new here so please forgive if this isn't in the appropriate location.

I belong to a more conservative forum and I'm mainly here to double check a question since I'm not getting input from anyone that isn't very conservative. I do listen and learn but mostly want to verify a no go idea.

I currently have a cycled 65 gallon with 12 bloodfin tetras, 2 clown plecos, and, as of today, 3 sterbai corys. I'm making weekly tours of the area to slowly increase my cories since very few survive shipping and they sell fast.

My ultimate plan, possibly is the following:

12 bloodfin
8 sterbais
2 clown plecos
2 gbr
And....
A rotkeil.

I've been told that the rotkeil is too big for this tank but internet lore is highly conflicting on this. I'm over filtered but prefer that it didn't matter. I also have the decor to keep everyone happy and a decent amount of plants throughout the tank.

The reason I'm really wanting the rotkeil to work is my lfs said a lot of blue acara are returned for aggression, but not so with the sevs. Dude hooks me up all the time so I'd like to believe him but I'm also pretty sure he'd offer me a discus if I asked.

Also, after seeing some adult blue acara, I must admit I'm not a fan of the face of them. Something about it just looks like they've headbutted a rock and lost the color or something.

I do listen to advice so if the general consensus is "dude you're pushing limits here!" I'll probably end up increasing numbers of what I have listed or just adding some angels.
Rotkeil can sometimes get aggressive when they are older I've seen them push large chocolate cichlids about more than once in tanks over 200UK gallons, but as with cichlids it's a risk and a 3ft tank seems to mall for a rotkeil which will be around 10-12 inches, and not much less in height it would look very overwhelming, have you thought about other medium sized south American cichlids instead
E.g
-Keyhole cichlids (8-13cm) you could get away with a breeding pair in your tank
-Festive/Flag cichlids (15-20cm) looks like a mix between angelfish and severum plus very peaceful

Thanks everyone. I think I'll just go with 2 or 3 apistos. I'm still slowly stocking so it's going to be a while. I guess worst case if I decide I want a larger centerpiece type it would be acara or bust. At the rate I'm getting sterbai around here it'll be a month before I finish stocking them lol.

As for the Cupids, I'd just rather not have something shovelling around my sand since I'll already have cories and plecos doing a bit of rearranging already. Just placed almost all of my plants on my spiderwood minus my swords and random bits so the bottom is more open for my bottom feeders.

I really appreciate everyone's help, even though I really wanted that rotkeil to work.

Let me know if I should start another thread for this.
My clown plecos are leaving a lot of golden mulm. (I suspect from the wood they re so fond of.) Would the stock as proposed be ok with a powerhead to keep the mulm in a deadspot or circulated towards my hob intake? These two little clowns make a nice tan pile all over my black sand! They're too cool when out and about though so I'm definitely not getting rid of them.

I think apistos are a fine choice, all species are beautiful IMO.

For the rotkeil-I would get a larger tank if not now, in the future. They are a popular species and aren't going away anytime soon.

I can't ever find festivum at any shops within 2 hours or me. Anyone know where I can find some online?

Another option for you is rainbow cichlids. I have 3 new ones in my 75 and I've already fallen in love with them.
