65g Malawi show tank, need ideas on stocking...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
What are the dimensions of the tank? Important info before decided to stock large haps and peaocks. BTW i recognize you from the designsbynature website, great pics! I have a bg from them aswell and am really happy with it, especially with some nice algae growth on it now.

I would definatly do saulosi. The 3' tank would limit you to a single species smaller mbuna. Since males are a nice blue and females bright yellow, and they are fairly peaceful it would make a great display. Maybe a bunch of demasoni but males and females are the same color so you lose the contrast. Plus they are far more aggressive. There's also the cyno afra species but the females are drab. I wouldn't attempt peacocks or haps in a 3' tank. Maybe 3 or 4 very peaceful peacocks that do not look like eachother. But even then you never know. If it were my tank I'd definatly go saulosi species tank, would make a great display.

I tried a mbuna stock inna 65G tank that size. Worked about a year.

Too small length wise and when they start to put on their sunday best all hell breaks loose and there is no where to hide. Keep it all male and small size and you can get away with it, once you add the girls you are looking for trouble.

You can do it but forget the venustus, borleyei, c. moorii and any of the larger Haps. They need 6' at the least to get along.

Guy on my local forum sold me all his Africans, a 75 gal tank, hood, stand, light, filters heater etc all for 200. Put the Midas in the 75 solo, and the AFricans (had to give 8 away to another member) in the 65, wahoo, they all have grown out together so it's an active mature family of fish. Built the lace rock frame out of 1/2" pvc and the substr. is Aragonite. Will post pics of the 75 with the Midas when the water clears a little.
