I've been asking around in the poly & general sections, but I figure I'll ask here since its getting more cichlid-heavy now.

I've got a 65g set up with sand driftwood & rocks. Rena xp3 for filtration, ph right around 7, water is in the middle of soft/hard on a test strip (don't remember the actual value, I use the API kit now and it doesn't have that test).

So far I have two senegal bichirs and a jack dempsey. The bichirs are 3 & 4", the dempsey is probably between 2" & 3".

I'm thinking about adding a green terror to the mix. I want to have at least one or two more cichlids (in addition to the dempsey) so they can (hopefully) focus whatever aggression they have on eachother and leave my bichirs alone.

Are the GT & JD pretty evenly matched for size full grown?

Other options I've been considering are fish like Blue Acaras, Severums, that sort of thing. I'm also thinking I might add a smaller catfish of some sort, maybe a striped raphael cat or a pair of pictus cats. I'm not sure about these though, I don't want to crowd the bottom too much considering the two bichirs.

So basically, what do you guys think about a jack dempsey/green terror together, and what other fish do you think I could add to the mix? I am planning on expanding my tank space over the next few years, but I'm not counting on it happening any time soon. So this has to work in the long term in case I'm not able to get the larger tanks I want for 2+ years.

Thanks for any help:popcorn:

no they need a 125gal.

you could do the two senegal bichirs and a jack dempsey with a severums and a Blue Acara that would be it.

I'm not really interested in oscars. I'm pushing my filter enough as it is with the stock I have in mind, no sense in trying to think about oscars, especially with their size.

Most things I see say jack dempsey's and green terrors stay closer to the 8-10" range, and more like 8", so what do they actually get to be and how long does it take to get there?

I'm leaning back towards the jack dempsey, green terror, 2 senegal bichirs, and maybe 3 pictus cats. The pictus cats are another fish that I'm getting different answers on how big they get. Everything I read says they stay around 4-6" but a few people have said they're an 8-10" fish.

I have a JD and green terror in a 55 together and they get along fine. You will need a bigger tank within the year though as they will become more territorial as they grow. IDE suggest a 125 or something like that.

what is the dimension of the 65g? why not get a mate for your JD? the JD and GT are gonna squabble a bit in such a small tank. a pair of JDs are more likely to get along together.

I think, in a 65, if the bichirs in the tank even make it past a few weeks, a pair would definitely obliterate them at night when they try and go steal their eggs.

Multiple oscars yes, a single oscar no. However, I get what you're saying that he can't throw an oscar in the tank with what he has and expect everything to be fine. Messy fish they are.
