6ft Monster aquarium stocking?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
6x4 will be one heck of a purchase and no doubt have to be built on site.
That opens a huge set of options with regards to catfish and plecs but to be honest comes down to what you like. If you were thinking Niger cat then yes, too big, even for this tank, but many other girraffe cats would fit, other than the really large ones.
Again , many options around pims, a few hemibagrus, tig or Jurense.
would avoid the turtle as they tend to be messy and bring different challenges.
cats will really be based around “living with rays” both from a point of view of safe from the ray side and safe from the cat side.
personally I don’t do bare tanks, or ponds and both my tanks and pond have sand or gravel and decoration, plenty of wood, pipes and rocks, just cos I find it helps the fish act naturally and my role as fish keeper is to a) give them the best quality water I can and b) give them the best life I can, which to me means making it as natural as I can in a tiny (in comparison) box.

Awesome thats super helpful. Will give the turtle a miss then, was bottom of my list but thought it might be cool, happy to go without it though. I really liked the look of the silver dorado catfish but not sure if it would get on with the tigrinus as they are both from the same family? I do like unique and differnt fish, just you don't see too often. I do like the sound of adding some hardscape for the reasons you mention so maybe be worth trying to incorporate it.

Currently the list is-
Asian arowana
Tigrinus
Datnoid
BD stingray

Maybe dorado catfish if it can get on with the Tig and maybe a smaller P Bass

Thanks

I never thought Fly River Turtles could live with rays and Asian Aro. 340 is a nice size tank, but is it big enough to hold all these monsters?

Yeah looks like I'm going to give the turtle a miss. Was at the bottom of my list anyway so don't mind going without it. And I'm not sure if the tank is big enough hence me asking ? I'm hoping so but not sure. Think around 6 fish would be good and maybe a few plecos but not sure if they can all be combined etc.

Thanks

I would leave out the ray and tig, and try to stick with the Asian theme. Aro, FRT, Dat, a small group of tinfoil barbs, and some larger SAEs.

I really would love to try the Ray and tig, I prefer more south American fish. Any reason you say to leave them out? Just curious?

Thanks

Lots of people like to keep it purist, some more than others. Depends on what you are looking for.
I will say that typically fish from the same region are more suited to deal with each other.

Fair enough that does make more sense. Maybe I go for a south American theme then as this is definitly my favourite collection of fish. Shame silver arowana get so big though. Got plenty of time to think it out and its always good to get other peoples ideas etc. Think I will definitly try and do a nice hard scape too.

If you can get an Asian aro, do it. They are better suited for that size tank, and this way all of us Americans can live through yours lol.

There are lots of really good ideas here. One of the main challenges you will face is compatibility with each other.

all of the fish and even the frt can work together for a time frame. Lots of people can make these combos work, but a big part plays into individual fish or turtles. I have seen some frt work really well with rays and other more sensitive items on your list. But then I have also seen frt’s that destroy any other fish in their tanks even including large armoured plecos which are tanks.

I think you are better off keeping the frt out of the mix for the same reasons already mentioned.

wether or not you decide to keep it pure or mix continents is up to you, but I would encourage you to find a happy medium based on the requirements / tolerance of those particular fish. Ie what are the temp requirements, ph etc.

your best bet is to collect some of the fish you want to put into the mix, or even all of them as they are young, and see who works in the balance of life in the tank, then remove or add them while they are still young so they are less lethal to each other. Just keep in mind as they grow and the tank starts getting smaller to them their aggression levels will often increase.

good luck and post pics when you start getting some of this together.

Haha okay I will start a tank thread when I get round to it. Currently waiting on a house move so getting everything prepared. Hoping to start getting a few fish together november/December time.

Thanks
