6ft x 3ft x 2.5ft - 5 aros and 3 rays? is this ok?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have owned adult aros in the past. I had them in a 8'x4' indoor pond and at about 30" they started to develop barbel damage. One even rammed so hard into the viewing window it split it's lower jaw. It can be done, but it would be the eqiuvelent of keeping you in a 6'x6'x12' box for the rest of your life (even people on death row aren't subjected to that)

Now enough with the drama did yall see this thread is linked to another forum also? Show some dignity and stop highjacking threads for personal differences and be a representative for the MFK family.

Thanks, just like to hear for people who have actually keep/kept adult arowana. Sucks to hear, was the barbel damage from rubbing the tank sides as they turned or just ramming the tank if spooked? Guess I've just been lucky with mine as I'm at 2.5 years in a 8x3' without issue.

I cannot understand this comparison when people say, like living in a room ? If you start making this comparisons it will never end my freinds becuase when you take a fish from a lake or a river or what ever, it is always a small room for the fish no mater how large the tank is. I am not saying that the tank is good for thoes fish, but some times peopel make it look like it is some thing unbelievabel to doo !

I had two 30 inches silvers in the past in a 8 x 2.5 x 2 tank , never, ever, ever, ever, had problems with space or amonia or what so ever, and I had many more fish with them not so lage but their where more.

Well, I don't know about ray, just heard that they require frequent water change and prestine water. However, I have a tank same size with your proposal, except mine is 30" wide and 36" tall. You'll have no idea what I have in there with my nine arowana, leichardti, that is 15in to 24in...

I hear you! Some people keeping fish when riding high horse...

I personally think it depends on what type of arowanas, some asians like malayan golden and RTGs do not grow that big compare to reds n silvers, I know of many asian hobbyist (inc me) who'd kept 5 or more those asian aros in 6 footer without much of a problem, just routine weekly WC 20% will suffice.

I think that's way too much fish mass for that sized tank. I had a tank with the same footprint and I think it would look really overstocked with those fish. I'm imagining the aros fully grown (3') and all swimming at the surface like they do and bumping into one another. I think regardless of the type of aro, it's still too many fish. There is a public aquarium in my area that used to have some 30"+ asian aros that were super thick. They would not have done well in a 6x3 footprint, but they looked awesome in their 10x6x5.

5 aros is way to many and so I'm made to believe its harder to keep them in less numbers because of aggression issues . I have one aro a ray with a large FH and 2 smaller FH's in a 7x2x2 which should just be able to keep to adult hood. Depending on your ray can get to 2 ft wide so 2 of them will need a large foot print, it seems most ray keepers with more than one have a 3 ft by 7/8 ft print. Have you though about middle water fish, ray on the bottom aros mainly on top?
