So I just got a preformed 6'x4'x24"tall pond (about 300gal capacity full) which I'll be using to grow out rays and some larger catfish. My question is as to what would be the best option for filtration. I can get a Fluval FX5 for a really good price (being an LFS employee sometimes has its perks :D), but I don't think that alone would be sufficient enough for biological filtration. Realistically I can expect about 500gph output from that (once it's loaded with media), which isn't nearly enough turnover for what I'm looking for. What I was considering was using the FX5 for primarily mechanical filtration and having it drain into a DIY bio tower which would then drain into the pond. I like the idea of a powerful mechanical filter and the convenience of a canister, but I'm just not sure if it's worth it. Any suggestions?
Thoughts? Should I get the FX5 for now and consider either adding another in the future or some other canister? Or should I just bite the bullet and plan on another DIY system that I don't really have time to build? Any advice is appreciated!

get a sump
i have an fx5 but imo sumps way better

2x fx5 and a drip system.... use one fx5 and feed a bio tower and the other in the pond straight.... add a drip system auto water changer and your set ....

Yeah, I think that might be what I end up doing. For now though, 1 FX5 into a bio tower will have to do. I will only have one small ray in there for a while so that should be more than enough. As for a drip system, I don't think that would be feasible given the location of the pond and the plumbing in the basement. I'll have to do the water changes the old fashioned way. One more question though, I was planning on using sand for the bottom, will this be an issue with the FX5's? If I keep the intakes towards the top do you think it will still get into the filters? If it's going to be an issue I'll just plumb the intake of the FX5 to drain from a surface overflow.

this is my set up
one on the left fx5, tub full of bio balls with a submerged pump and UV sterilizer, and auto drip works great good luck.
