What I was considering was using the FX5 for primarily mechanical filtration and having it drain into a DIY bio tower which would then drain into the pond. I like the idea of a powerful mechanical filter and the convenience of a canister, but I'm just not sure if it's worth it. Any suggestions?

I've actually already done this; I've got a 5 gallon bucket full of filter floss and bio-media that is fed by the water fall from a planted tank that is powered by the canister filter. It works, and I love the noise of the water falling from the holes in the bucket to the surface of the water column; it is really soothing, and my water stays both clear and ammonia/nitrite free.

one on the left fx5, tub full of bio balls with a submerged pump and UV sterilizer, and auto drip works great good luck.

...wow. Where do you get the covers for your stock tubs?
