if you do build up around the pond (almost said pool) than lay the perimeter rocks/blocks with towers of cinder blocks and a tarped over a really thick layer (most likely even layers) of inch plywood then lay gravel-sand-dirt and plant

try building a patio around the whole pool rather then only right next to it. that way it'll be a cool patio with a pond right in the center of it.
