One of the guys in jail now is the owner of the biggest company in Manaus, Brazil, shipping over 50% of all Brazilian fish. His company is closed.
#2 company is not shipping anything.
7 of the 20 or so licenced ray exporters are in jail, including one from Sao Felix ( eclipses and black diamonds) and one from Itaituba (P14)
They are also arrested for Zebra plecos and some Ancistrus and others.
Everyone is afraid of everything, so ship nothing.
At least, this is what a couple of exporters and trans-shipper are telling me about cancelled shipments as of yesterday. I am quite not sure if it is fear or if IBAMA ( as it is now) is not giving export approvals or what.

Spoke to my local wholesaler earlier. Two of his main sources are under arrest. Local guy never has anything Illegal, I know this...I worked there for a while. He just lost sources for the legal stuff though. Those remaining as mentioned are afraid to export right now. Freeze per say.

7 people, among them 3 ornamental fishes companies' owners were arrested in Altamira, PA, Brazil on Wed. Aug. 19, 2009. They were being accused of illegal export of ornamental fishes and stingrays protect by IBAMA.( Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources). Those fishes were being collected from Xingu river and said of being exported to the USA, Germany, Japan and China.

1.500 species were caught by IBAMA in tanks next to Xingu River. They were packed in plastic bags and ready for shiping.

According to the Federal Police of the Para state, some of the stingrays were ready to be exported to Europe and sold of the price of EUR 6.000. Prohibited zebra plecos for more than EUR 1.000 each.

Do not buy illegaly imported fishes. Check, carefully, the origin of the fishes.

I hope the US soon honors other contries bans and follows through with their own bans on these fish/rays from Brazil.
