I bought a small GT on October 2010. He still hides away when I go near the tank even during feeding time. After raising Oscars and African cichlids, I was quite surprised to see a cichlid so afraid. I thought he may change as he gets a bit older. But he still keeps hiding.

He was in a 30gallon with a couple of Yellow labs for first 3 months I had him. Now he's in a 58 gallon [42*18*18] with a 4inch synodontis ocelliferi and 3 giant danios and a Yellow Apple snail. The Gt's about 5 inches now. I tried to starve him for a couple of days and then fed him while staying in front of the tank. The ocelliferri and danios came up and started eating the pellets but the gt was cautious and didn't eat till I moved away from the tank about 15 minutes later.

Diet is Hikari pellets, and the occasional market prawns

This is him when i bought him:

Any Suggestions?

P.S. Sorry 4 the medium quality pics Took the photo from phone

wish i could help but i tend to think it has to do with the fish itself and how it was raised. was it picked on by the labs at all?

I've had several GTs now and that's just how some are.

Had a beautiful little male around 4" and he was JUST like that.

I've had my GT for about 2.5 years now and he is just now getting confident enough that he will try to attack my hand through the glass and this is only occasionally. He still hides quite a bit but it's getting better.

i think it would help if you add in more danios and have a larger school in there to help him feel more comfortable or a smaller growing cichlid would be even better, IME some fish just dont like being by themselves and will hide alot if they are the only cichlid in a tank or there isnt a large school of smaller fish to help them feel safe and have to compete with for food

I have a Jack Dempsey that hides at least 85% of the time ( I know its not a GT as OP is explaining ) and he won't eat unless I move from the tank, unless I am feeding him krill. He used to be less shy when I had an oscar in the tank and would eat from the surface and the day I removed the oscar he became a hider.... not sure if it was because he loved to pick on the oscar and compete but thats my story hope it helps. I also have a fire mouth, nicaraguan and a salvini with 4 silver dollars in a 100 gallon.

some fish are just skittish.

Thank u 4 all the replies..

The Labs didn't bother him at all when he was with them.
I will try adding more danios and see if it helps or maybe a female convict??

He's a beautiful fish.. Too bad I have to stay 3 feet away to see him. Hope he changes

i would add more danios AND a con, i just know that with my arg he was super outgoing when i had a bunch of other cichlid growouts in the tank, then when i thinned out my stock so that he was pretty much the only cichlid of any size he hid ALL the time it was soo frustrating, adding in some serpae tetras helped a little bit to bring him out but he comes out way more now that there are other cichlids in the tank again, he just doesnt like being by himself
