7' x 2' x 3' (LxHxD) build thread! :D

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I'd be inclined to stick with the glass build for that size, unless you really want the extra height for something specific. 12mm glass will be fine for a 2' high tank (in fact you could stretch it to 26" tall and still keep the safety factor close to 3 with 12mm) so the glass build shouldn't be too expensive and you'll end up with a better looking and more durable tank. If you were set on the 3' height then the ply would be a cheaper option for sure as you'd be looking at more like 19mm glass, which would be very expensive.

honestly, it's mainly for esthetic purposes.

agreed!

yeah, that's exactly why I was thinking of going plywood but also because in the near future, I'm going to build some serious monster tanks so I want to have practice in building big tanks already. Plus, the price id be paying for a 7'x3'x2' glass is still quite expensive as its been quoted at £700+ which I think is OTT so I'm still looking around as I don't want to rush this build.

nice thread mate ! il follow this one
just my 2 pence worth .
id go with the ply wood build .a glass tank of 7x3x3 will (1) be mega ££££ and (2) massively heavy !!

Also my input: just frame it up as if it were walls for a house (top plate, bottom plate, studs in between) with 2x4's, 16 inches on center. 16 inches on center makes a fine sized opening for putting your canister filters in as well. I built one similar for my 150g and just put a false front on so it can easily be pulled off so I can work on the filtration underneath.

P.S. You could probably even get away with 24" on center for the framing. you'd be surprised the compressive strength of 2x4's.
