Im looking to put together a 700 gallon FOWLR tank when my tax return comes back this spring... right now i have a Humu Humu trigger and a Foxface and a small yellowtail damsel that are in one of my 55 gallons and in my other i have an orange and a 3 stripe blck and white damsel. (yes everyone gets along)....what else would anyone suggest putting in the tank.. i plan on having the rock set up somewhat like a sandbar so the fish can swim in and out and around the rock structures... the tank is going to be 96X48X36... any suggestions?? The gf wants a clown trigger, and i think that would be cool , you guys think there will be enough room for both of them to get along???

holy crap 700g are you serious, that's a serious tank size. I would think there would be plenty of space for each fish in a tank that big. I can only imagine a water change on that one, keep up updated, pics are always nice too.

Yeah im not too worried about water changes..I'm thinking right now that im going to have an RO unit hooked directly up to one of my extra 55 gallons and have that plumbed to the tank somehow so when i drain what i need i'll have the premixed saltH2O in there and just pump it into the tank when needed..but as with all water changes, better filtration MOST of the time = less water changes..

water changes once a month should still be carried out reguardless, clown triggers are very aggressive , not to put down your idea but 700 gallons is enough room to hold about 30 clown triggers , i think your going overkill , going from a 55 to a 700. you do know that everything together including sand , liverock , chemicals, fish , filtration, installments and everything your looking at 20,000 dollars roughly. not to mention about 500$ a month to service that , yes you can get cheaper on both
prices listed but thats if you did it by the "books". if money isnt an issue then thats awsome , but still think maybe you should do like a 150 - 200. Thats still even a big step. Sorry for kinda putting down your idea , but this is kinda crazy going from a 55 to a 700. take a look at my gallery all those fish are in a 210 and that seems huge , i have a clown and mulitple fish. that stock costs 1,500 dollars , imagine stocking a 700. just some thoughts but if you do go through with it that would be badass and post pics

I like big tanks with light stocking. The less fish and more live rock the less water changes you have to do. I normally would say watch out o the stocking of triggers but on a tank that size you are pretty sure there won't be a problem. Also the fish you mentioned will be quite large when full grown so it will look very good.

were going to make the tank ourselves, doing a DIY ply build (That will have its own thread l8r on), so im not worried about spending an arm and a leg on that, as for the equip. most of that I've already required. So im not worried about the setup and upkeep, just trolling for ideas on what to stock it with. Im really looking to have 20 fish or so, i hate having tanks that look overcrowded but rather let everyone have a good chunk of space to leave each other alone.

wow thats great to see a 700 gallon FOWLR tank. I need to think more on this before I can respond.

The cost of going to that large of a tank will of course be more electric , salt and bigger equipment but if you do alittle at a time and look for deals it doesnt seem to bad, I am nearly done with my 800 gallon 9' round Ray pond and I have a 100 gallon pond that I am coming from. A lightly stocked tank and good filtration will help with water changes but not negate them as you already know. There is alot of DIY plans on denitrators and big skimmers, so if you are on a tight budget thats the way to go, so dont let others discourage you, just do the research and ask alot of questions.

and i thought it cost alot money to set up a 20gal reef

I agree, im planning on doing alot of DIY stuff, more on that later. So im looking into a Clown Trigger and a Snowflake eel, about 3 heniochus butterflies, a Hippo Blue Tang, a Sailfin Tang, and an Emperor Angel. Question is should i have enough space for more than 1 angelfish.
