I recently obtained a 72 gallon bow front tank from a relative. I have posted several threads in regards to the same tank but I get maybe one or two answers and then watch as the thread slowly falls off the first page. I plan on keeping some New Jersey natives in the tank. Filtration is a fluval 304 canister filter and I was also thinking about adding one or two HOB's just as some extra filtration. I have never set up a canister before so I was wondering what I should put in it. It currently has an HOB on it but it is way to small for the tank and I just put it on because it was laying around. I was looking to stock with some black crappie, yellow perch, mud sunfish, and possibly a pickerel or a catfish. All fish are going to be put in at a relatively small size and will grow out in this tank. Hopefully this thread doesn't die like the rest. Thanks in advance

Get two or one aquaclear 110's then use two of the three baskets in the 304 for carbon and good quality bio balls. That's what I would do.

I thought bio balls but I wasn't sure if you could put them in a canister. I'll do bio balls and carbon then. any brand of bio balls you would recommend? And how about the stock list. Does that sound like too much? I really appreciate the replies. So glad that I'm finally getting the help I need

Most peoples don't use carbon in there canister filter, so fill that chamber with more bio media, it's more useful to your system.

Should I just fill all three baskets with bio balls then? I have these ceramic tubes too that came with a filter I bought. Maybe two with bio balls, one with the ceramic tubes and then the sponges on the side as well as the HOB's

Sure you can fill up all 3 baskets with bio media.
*Note: The top basket most folks use water polishing pad for more water clarity, if you don't need that then fill it with bio media.

get some seachem matrix and fill the baskets with it, skip the carbon, not needed, the AC110 great suggestion, again no carbon in it either, add an extra bio bag in its place. the AC110 will really help take the mech filtration load off the canister. they are ok bio filters but a much better mech filter.
