Thinking of setting up another Gar tank. This will most likely house a few trops, possibly a cuban if I can find another. My only question is that the tank I am considering is only 18" top to bottom. I think this should be just fine, but every thread that discuses tank dims, says 24". I prefer having the 18" tank, and I cant see any reason this should be a problem for the Gar, just tell me Im right!

Thanks,
Chris

hey Chris,

you should be fine...that depth shouldn't really give you any problems. i think in most threads when 24" is suggested it's for people setting up a brand new tank or purchasing one. your other dimensions, particularly the width, more than make up for the 18" "shallow" depth.

do you still have the Cuban i sold you? either way, looking forward to updates on progress if you do set up a gar tank once again--

Solomon,

Thanks for the reply. Regretably I was forced to sell the Cuban, when my 450g sprung leaks all along the front gass. Tank was a complete loss. I basicaly sold everything I had at that point, and have since been reduced to keeping a small native tank for darters. I have a few other fish floating around here too, but nothing to make up for the Gar that I had to sell off.

I am having the tank custom built, so I coudl go to 24" if there is any advantage for the fish, I prefer the 18" as I can have it overbuilt, and skip the braces. Im about the fish though, so Id like to do the best I can by them.

I will certainly keep you up to date with my stock once I settle on the build.

Thanks,
Chris

care to elaborate on what you mean by preferable Richard?

Well this is one of those cases where you will see "IMO" behind it which states it is opinion and not a tested case. That said, I have had much luck keeping them in shallower conditions. They seem to be more relaxed and confident in a shallow tank. Seems to improve activity and lessen stress related problems. Again this is just observation and a educated opinion. It is fully possible to keep them in taller deeper tanks as well with similar results. Myself I have just gone to keeping them in shallower systems.

Shortnosed and Longnosed are similar in this reGard, however with them it is showing to be a bit more than an educated opinion that they do better in such conditions. They (especially shorts) particularly seem to do better in shallow rather than deeper aquaria and holding tanks.

My 500 is 24" high while my previous tank was 31" high. I had a tropical gar jump twice from the 31" tank and zero times so far from the 24" tank. (no casualties)

Of course it could merely be coincidence, but it also may add some credence to Richard's thoughts.

Anyways, to the OP, dimensions seem nice on that tank. I look forward to pictures.

And if you remember who you sold the Cuban too, I'll gladly take their email address. ;)

Thanks man, still working out the specifics with the builder, so far so good. Should be up and running in the next few months. Wish I had been able to do this sooner, and you know why.......
