alright. i own a 75 gal aquarium with one tiger oscar and one jd. niether of them are fully grown. can a needlefish survive with them or will they rip it apart? i really want a needlefish, so i may decide to either put the JD or oscar up for adoption. which should i choose?

sounds like fish bait why risk it.
my Oscars will eat anything that fits in there mouth.
what kind of needle fish?

I personally think both the Oscar and the JD will be poor tank mates for the needle nose gar. Both of these Cichlids will probably tear it up also, I believe that the needle nose gar fairs better in brackish water.Maybe you should look into some other types of gars but be weary of how big they get! I hope this helps

I happen to have a needlenose gar, and it really isn't the aggressive type, it just eats what fits in its mouth and ignores the rest. I can't imagine it getting along with cichlids, neither the Oscar or the Jack Dempsey.

If you really like needlenose gars, you could give away both cichlids and get a few gars. They are a schooling fish, you know.

(BTW, needlenose gars do well in both fresh and brackish. I've even heard of them spawning in fresh, so obviously those conditions are sufficient.)

If it fits, an Oscar will try to eat it.

Though my Oscar never ate my Gar, but mine is no needlenose...

yea, true florida gar can be a slighty, almost-too-passive tankmate for oscars. i have 2 oscars and 2 floridas. the floridas do OK. the needle nose fish that you're talking about, probably does not have a chance. i think an oscar would dominate.

by needlefish I think he means the rocket gar which isn't a gar but a characin and u only have room for the oscar or the Dempsey definitly not the needlefish too

yea, i understood which species he was referring to. they're very timid and kind of puny. i don't think they can hang with oscars. with my 2 floridas, i have to take special care to ensure that they get food. my arowana and oscars are pigs, while the 2 floridas are a bit laid back and passive. the needles, that he's referring to, would not survive in my tank.

How true, my Florida has to check things out first,go back in reverse, go into stealth mode, sneak up on the dead feeder and THEN eat it.
Totally different from the way my Oscar, he allways eats like i never feed him!
Last week i got totally soaked by my O's enthousiasm after I threw in the first worms.
Now that's what I like about monsterfishkeeping, getting the occasional tidal wave from your fish!:headbang2
