75 Gallon Filtration help needed.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
So far this is what I'm thinking I will be running in my set up. I'm going with, x2 FX6's with pre filter sponges on the intake, x2 large 125 gallon Hydro sponge filters with a submersible power heads (high flow rate). I will also be running a turbo twist UV Sterilizer on both outtakes as well as in-line heaters.

Please tell me what you think of this set up? I feel like this will be a great set up for predators with lots of waste.
Depends a bit on the size of the tank but yeah. I much much prefer the 2262 to the fx6. But that's my opinion take it for what it is, I've had both and the fx6 just can't compete.

Another vote for Sunsun. I've got two Sunsun 302's in service and love them. A 304B and an Aquaclear 110 would be great on a 75g. On my 75g, I run an AC 110 and a Marineland C360. The only reason I have the C360 is I got it on sale for under $100 3-4yrs ago. Eheims are awesome, but I can't bring myself to spend the money on one when I can get a Sunsun for 1/3 of the cost.

The API Filstar(formerly Rena) canister line is imho the best for small/medium tanks. I have many, a couple pushing 15yrs. Zero issues with any of them. Filtration aside, why has nobody mentioned the basic flaw with keeping 2 insanely aggressive fish that can exceed 16ins in a pittance of a tank? Where's the sanity??!!

Go all in, get a drill and a sump. Most can be drilled on the side glass. Cheaper than a canister and lots of possibilities.

Hello Everyone,

I need help with figuring out the best possible set up for my 75 Gallon aquarium. As of right now the plan is to stock it with two Common Wolf Fish (Hoplias Malabaricus). My concern is what type of filtration I should set up I want to run a dual system (I think) I will definitely be running two sponge filters in the aquarium. Open to as many suggestions as I can get. I do have a budget on this but want to set up the best thing I can. Also contemplating a UV sterilizer to help on the over all maintenance. Thank you and I look forward to what everyone has to say.
I didn't read the entire thread, but I have two overstocked 75g tanks and one of them is running on an Aqua-Tech 30-60 HOB, and a Marineland Emperor 400 HOB for a total of 140 gallons, which is exactly double the water volume since a 75g actually only holds slightly under 70 gallons of water IF there is nothing but water in it. After gravel and décor and fish it will more likely only have 60-65 gallons of water total volume.

The second 75g I own runs on a Marineland Penguin 350 HOB, a Marineland Penguin 170 HOB and a Penn-Plax Cascade 500 canister for a total of 155 gallons - again, more than double the water volume. Maintenance is minimal, I do weekly water changes of about 60-70% and unplug filters for anywhere between 15-60 minutes during feeding. By doing this it allow food the settle on the bottom so the catfish and other benthic fish can pick it up rather than wasting it by letting it get sucked into the filter - I do this everyday.

My suggestion is run a HOB and a canister or instead of a canister do a sump OR I also have tanks that I run 2 HOBs and a Sponge Filter so either way, I believe variety is the best way to do things, but according to most a SUMP is the best way to go.

Do you mean you'll be running 2x UV's as well??? Coz i thought one would be enough...

Since API took over "RENA", the filter quality has gone south. I had 3 XP3's from 2004-2015 (which where great)... Bought several more @ petsmart in 2015 and return them a week later. Filters leaked, plastic was thinner and over all quality was very very very poor.
