this is what i run on my 75s.. all my tanks are crystal clear. the 2nd tank is currently growing out smaller cichlids.. all less than 3 inches

#1 emp 400, 2x emp 200
#2 AC 110
#3 AC 110 ehiem 2213 (not sure if thats exact model)

I've had a Emperor 400 on my 75g for a year now and have had zero problems. Waiting on my whisper to go out so I can justify getting one for the 55 too.

I've got a sump and a Fluval 404 on mine. I got the 404 on ebay for $90, and it works great. Very quiet and easy to use.

However, a new fluval 405 (the more recent model, with minor changes) is $200 new.

I prefer the can over the HOBs I have on smaller tanks, but they are a lot more expensive if you get a new one. Eheim 2217, fluval 405, and rena xp3 all seem to get good reviews. One of those and a AC110 or Emperor 400 would be plenty.
