75 gallon Firemouth build thread

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That is an excellent tank. I don't comment on that a lot as there usually isn't a lot to say and no one else wants to read 20 people saying the same thing. It is so nice to see someone value the firemouths as they are. It is so sad when we get caught up in this fish isn't "worth anything" or "rare enough". I think they are one of the most under appreciated fish out there. LFS fish come from the Florida farms. I know everyone talks bad about them, but IME they grow out into very nice specimens if you are patient. I think Toiletcar Toiletcar 's fish are right in line with what to expect, but I have seen them grow up even brighter. He also made a great choice with the swords.

I kept jungle val with them and had no problems, but I did cover the roots with larger rocks to get them established. Once they settled in and let runners go they didn't seem to need the rocks.

Thank you FLA, I appreciate the reply. The Firemouth had a long history in the hobby, I'm glad they haven't disappeared and are relatively easy to find still-unlike the regular (non-electric) blue acara. There are a few threads I've drawn from here in this forum that celebrate the Thoricthys group, Stanzzz 2 threads in the stickies has provided huge inspiration, and another user (I think Firemouthgem?) have created the template I'm following (limited species, but in greater numbers) for a more naturalistic aquarium. In the age of facebook groups and reddit, I'm glad there's a forum with hardcore hobbyists plugging away here. MFK has provided some invaluable insight and tidbits that I might have taken years and years to gather on my own.

Thanks ?
Mine are just your average LFS. Not quality F0 or F1 which are hard to find. Some catch locations are really colorful. Unfortunately I don’t see many available. Rio Mopan is referred to the “black meeki” because it has less red but more blue. On my wish list of thorichthys to keep.

Hey, your Tank looks amazing! I actually had to pull my swords and put them in the community 55 due to over-aggression they were getting torn up. beautiful driftwood as well! I currently have 2 Tiger lotus bulbs, Ludwigia, jungle vals, Anubias nana, Anubias Coffeefolia, and Anubias barteri and I just purchased a group of plants off of dustin's fishtanks cyber Monday sale to split to fill in the gaps in the 30 gal grow out/fry tank and the 75 cichlid tank. Can't wait to see what you do with your tank Johnez!

Dude I have to say your tank provided a LOT of inspiration, thanks! The discussion in your thread provided a foundation for my own tank. I'm currently waiting for my own plant shipment from Dustin, can't wait. I had to get the lotus bulbs too since he was out of plants, of course I found gorgeous plants at an LFS the next day-doh! That's a bummer about your swords tho. Perhaps I should stick with a trio or straight FM species only. I'm glad you dropped by, I hope your tank does well. I have a 29 gallon sump and a 55 gallon I got on sale at my bro's if things go south so I'm ready for my own challenges.

Thanks ?

That is a beautiful strain, wow.

My tank is doing very well, Thank you! I have 6 firemouths and 4 bristles (one of which I am about to move into the 30 grow out). My largest FM I call Sharko likes to move plants around on me. Agreed on meeki in the video is absolutely beautiful. Think I am almost as pumped as you to see your tank, I may have to ping ideas off of you at some point.

Alrighty fellas, my plants should be arriving soon and now I'm figuring out filtration.

I'm leaning toward having a 29 gallon sump for a few reasons, number one being the increased water quantity, but also as a permanent back up tank for a hospital/time out/grow out/quarantine tank. That being said, if I have to isolate the sump (especially for quarantine), I want to have a good enough filtration system on the 75 to keep on trucking if/when that happens. I'm considering internal filtration for the 75 and am envisioning having 4" PVC upright on both ends connected by a 1" length of PVC with a pump in the middle. One side as a skimmer drawing water in and filled with gradually finer foam, and the other filled with lava rock for a bacterial home or maybe some very coarse foam to spill back out into the tank. I know sponge filters would be easy, but I'm not a huge fan of them.

I've not had this much fun putting together a tank in a long while, so many dang options. Curious if anyone's done something like this before, specifically for the purpose of isolating tanks if need be. Sump is going to be super simple, no baffles, not filling it with tons of media or anything, but am going to keep a sponge filter in there, or maybe a fluidized media (sand?) filter. Planning on using it to store/grow out plants, and maybe keep a black worm culture going, hopefully some pest snails too to feed my loaches in my other tank.

Yeah this sounds fun ?
Want to do more to my 150g. I collected some branches and leaves. Just have to find the time.
We just had some Santa Anas winds, kinda bummed I gotta work. Maybe I'll get out with enough light to scavenge at the park haha.

Dustin's plants came in.
Java moss (not shown)
Fissidens moss (not shown)
Jungle val
Giant val
Myrio scabratum
Tall hair grass
Wisteria (for other tank)

I've got my plants set up in the future sump right now with a little rosy barb I couldn't pass up, which will end up in my Indian/Asian tank. Mosses currently sitting under the outflow of the HOB in my Indian tank.

As for Dustin's plants-wow. Being they were in shipping nearly a week they turned out excellent. Only thing I wasn't thrilled about were the plants being wrapped all together with newspaper. Pulling them apart and removing every piece of newspaper wasn't fun. Also Java moss came in half brown, although there was a TON sent so not too worried. I've ordered from Cory and Jacob in the past, so far Dustin's provided the most plants per portion. Looking for the hair grass still, might be mixed in with the val or maybe I just can't identify it. :-/
