I really want to breed Jack Dempseys but I don't know the best way to get a pair. Should I buy 4 to 6 and watch them pair off. Or is there an acurate way to sex juviniles? I also want to add "dither" fish I was thinking 3-4 silver dollares and 2 male convicts. Am I overstocking or what.

One more question how long and what size do JD's usually start pairing off?

Hopefully part of this question will be answered in my thread from last night lol....

que?

well go for a group of 6 or more....these cichlids should pair off about 4-6"....you are not overstocking your tank....by then you woulld remove most of the anyway to keep the pair only

6 is a good number to start with, but keep in mine that within the frist year, they will grow to, at lease, 6 to 8 inch....might not wat to get more fish if you don't plan on upgradeing tanks. ane yes you acurately sex a juvi JD.
Male JD more color
Female not to much color compaired to the male.

got these two five months ago. male is 8'' and the female is 7''
male: more color
female: less color

female has more colorful jaw/gill plate.

I always thought males had more spangles on thier gill plate. Thats why they were more "colorful"
