females have the blue green on the gills while males have the spangle on sides. When I was chosing mine at the LFS, the fish were very stressed almost pale in color. I took 3 and got luckly with 1 male to 2 females. the females are more squaty and the males dorsal fin is longer maybe even past the end of the body.
 
Well, here is my pair, and as you can definitely tell who's the male and female....:)

nice looking pair of JDs. I bought mine before I knew how to sex them, ended up with a female (because I liked the blue on the gills). I just hope the GT I'm growing out ends up a male. Every fish I have is a female, except for 3 cons. I have the worst luck.

3 of my 4 fish are females too...
