ok so this project is long finished. well atleast to the level i have time and money for right now. sorry it took so long for my to update this thread. so i built my sump filter and dirted the tank. its now in my dining room with some plants and 2 sharks. i had the build done a while ago but just dirted the tank this past week. i still have some water changes to do to get rid of the last of the murkeyness but it looks pretty sick so far. i'll hopefully post some pick of where the projects at so far. as i said before i intend to fully cabinet the stand and build a canopy to suspend the light fixture in so its not just sitting on top of the tank like it is now. but you'll see it all in the pic's i put up later. im also contemplating whether building or buying a co2 setup is gonna be worth it for my tank. lmk what you think after i post the picks cuz i have hundreds of other fancy rocks and driftwood i collected for this tank but the decisions were just to many so i went really simple just to get it started. thanks

So here is a teaser of photos to come as i only have my phone to work with now. the tank is still a bit murkey from the dirt so i still have a couple water changes to do. enjoy
How did you go about connecting the 2x4's to the bottom frame ? I see many pictures like that where the bottom frame is attached to the vertical pots without the top and always wonder how they do it like that. I always have difficulty finding a good way to screw in the vertical posts and keeping it level.
ok so finally i have the energy to take some time for this hobby again. clearly a lot has happened in the year since i started this tank and sorry i wasn't around to answer questions. the good news is i have a lot of pictures and videos that i took over the year of whats happened with this tank. i think what i might do is post one or 2 pictures here and then start a new thread in the tanks section for going into all the transitions this tanks been through and different fish its inhabited. aswell because i started a platy breeding project thats getting out of hand and would like to put it all in one thread. so rather than going to far off topic here ill post a link to the other thread so all whos interested can see the rest of the pics (and videos if they make it up on youtube).

also i never did get around to closing in the stand and making it look pretty or building the canopy. i was in a severe work accident and my physical abilities were limited. im in better shape now but still have nerve damage. my accident was why i jumped the gun on setting up the tank before i finished the stand. i needed something to do that i could manage with my new physical limitations, so dressing up the stand and building a canopy were out of my realm of possibilities. plus starting the tank gave me something to divert my focus too, which aided my coping with post traumatic stress. its been a long road of physiotherapy and couseling. hopefully soon i'll be able to really finish this stand the way i originally imagined it. pics of the sump and new thread link will be up tomorrow (well later today i guess)

I'm thinking about building a stand as well. I'm not sure if I am doing a 75/90 (same length, do you think your stand could hold a 90?) but I might also do a 100G tank (which is longer.)
Any tips or expanding the build to hold a 100 G tank? And also what was the cost of the stand?

Do you guys perfer sump over filter? what is the difference? i dont quite understand the sump part yet besides that its another tank used for filtration. are they hard to build? i have an 75 gallon that i wanted to set up with some cichlids. Should i use a sump?
yes this stand could definitively handle another 15 gallons worth of water weight. 2x4 builds are over kill and could easily be replaced with the laminated particle board stands they pawn off in aquarium shops. as for adapting to a 100 gallon tank just add extra bracing as you see fit. this tank has all the weight being transferred to the stand only at the corners. ill get a shot for you tomorrow showing that only the corners are touching the stand with cork board pieces leveling it on the stand. the floor takes a weird dip where i put the tank so i had to make adjustments. in the skeleton stage its in, only about $65 or $70 in materials.
