Has anyone here ever had topaz cichlids? Those are pretty ones that don't seem to have lots of information on them. According to Imperial Tropicals they are aggressive. Would they not be ones to keep with livebearers like swordtails?

No but always been a bucket list fish. The way they color up when in breeding mode is remarkable. With no experience with them, I've READ they can possibly be aggressive and can match convict attitude and will hold their own against other, sometimes bigger fish. Swordtails will be fine as dithers, it's other cichlids that can be a possible issue depending on tank size. I'd say a pair of these beauties would establish a whole 75 gallon.

I have a pair in my fish room. They behave just like other Amatitlania which isn’t terribly aggressive. There are so many better looking species in that genus plus cryptoheros. Nanoluteus, Honduran sp., panamensis, and cutteri. I have quite a few more but lots of fish to potentially look at.

Those do look nice. Do the topaz get along with livebearers as dithers? What about the others you mentioned? I have a feeling if I go with Central Americans I will likely choose a Thorichthys species. But who knows. It will be a while before this comes to fruition.

You can see the myrnae pair has buenas Aires tetras in with them. A lot of my fish room tanks has too many fry so I’ll add tetras in for crowd control as I’m not a fan of culling.

Hey, one of my first fish when I was young (50 years ago?) were convicts. I loved em. And I had breeding keyholes to later on.
And you know what? These are the fish I remember. The memories.
Now people breed convicts for feeder.s Uggh.
You know that I was joking but yes Amatitlania is easily my favorite genus of fish and much like you I’ve bred thousands of nigrofasciata. Just now like so many other species they just look drab.
