75 gallon tank mates

A male JD and male nicaraguense will fight in that small 4 foot length. Adding a female nicraguense would also spell trouble because any of the males in your tank will pair with it, and then cause lots of problems for the other 2 fish.

Do not rely solely on turnover rate for proper filtration. The ammount of bio-media will determine if you have proper filtration. Ammonia and nitrites must be at 0ppm at all times. Use a liquid test to measure each parameter.

What reasoning is behind saying that a JD and a nicaraguense would fight in a 4 foot tank? Neither is generally hyper-aggressive, or particularly large growing. Of course it depends on the individual personality of the fish, as always, but I have seen far "worse" combinations work and far "better" ones fail. You can't really say that it won't work without trial and error, it's not like he's dealing with amphilophus or something.

I will be getting a nic on monday from my lfs and selling the oscar and auratus, the silver dollars have been moved to a larger tank. So my stocking list would be a JD, con, firemouth, nic, and featherfin cat. Still looking into dithers, any ideas? Any other cichlids that could work, maybe a salvini?

a 4 foot tank isn't a lot of space for territorial fish that get to 8-10 inches. They may not be hyper aggressive but they are territorial.

With that many fish in a 75 g you will not need any dithers to draw the fish out of hiding.

I know it's not a huge tank but in my personal opinion, there is a good chance of the nic and JD working out just fine. With the stocking you said (jd, firemouth, con, nic) I would not add any more cichlids, that sounds like a reasonably full stock. Like he ^ said, dithers wont be necessary in your tank, but if you really wanted to do some I would go with columbian tetras. Bueos aires would probably work too but can get very nippy.

Thats good to hear I didnt want dithers. Just wanted my fish happy. Thanks for all the helpful info! Could I get a bristlenose pleco they stay small, just curious, because they are great for algae.

i had a male convict and a male jack dempsey in a 4' tank and they wouldn't share it. the jd was about 5" and the convict was about 3".
