18" of depth is sort of the standard for sa/ca cichlids. It opens up doors to species that can't be keept in less. The only species you really cant keep in an 18" tank are some parachromis and umbee. You're going to love it.
That being said, I keep gold saums in 55's. But as a single wet pet tank. I wouldn't do a community like that. They seem to do fine. But if I ever get one that grows too big, I've got bigger tanks. They seem comfortable for now, though.
