I am fairly new to the hobby and have a 75 gal I want to stock with some pretty cool fish and want your guys input. I was looking into a green terror and a jaguar cichlid. I've seen videos where this has work, have any of you tried it? I'm going to keep the time with really only one big hiding place so the fish has to be ok without a lot of cover. Lastly, I don't really want a shy fish, I've had piranhas and they were so skittish I would never see them. I've also had oscars which would be the PERFECT fish if it wasn't so messy. Well fire away guys, thanks!

Welcome to the forum. 75 really is on the small side for a jag and Gt long term. Dont trust all the vids you see out there. What they dont show is the fish beating on each other or how many fish were rehomed to due to aggression.

How do you feel about convict types like hrp's and nanolutes, chocolate cichlids are nice.

Any other intrests besides chichlids ? Smaller fancy plecos or polypterus would also be cool

Yeah, I'm looking for a bigger fish that I can build around, something that will be impressive. It does not have to be a cichlid. Think of an Oscar....just not an Oscar, I can not keep up with there mess. Thanks for the reply!

75 isn't enough room for a Jag alone, let alone a Jag and a GT. Although it would make a fine home for a male GT for life in my opinion. If it was a female GT you could probably house something else with it.

You could also have like 2 Severums. If you like Oscars you could do a Chocolate Cichlid. They are sort of like oscars and very beautiful and stay a bit smaller. I just started growing out a chocolate myself a few days ago its still small and hides all day in a pvc pipe though.

I would stay clear of the Jags and other similar sized fish and pretty much all central american fish too. If you want more then one or two fish HRP's would be nice and I have 6 C. Nanoluteus that I'm growing out that are excellent. I plan on keeping them all in a 55 together if it works.

Yeah, I'll take your advice and not get those guys, how do you guys feel about a flower horn?

I personally haven't kept them before but I would like to try one at some point when I have space. They are the only hybrids I am not totally put off by. As far as keeping one in a 75 gallon I'm just not sure it's enough space but some people in the FH sub forum could help you. I would strongly suspect that even if it's enough space for one, he will be alone.

Don't be too put off by keeping a solitary fish though! I have a GT in my living room and he is incredibly interactive. I do think that when there's nothing going on inside a tank for fish to concern themselves with they take more interest in whats going out outside the tank. Having a "wet pet" is a great thing to do and there are a few that can work solo in a 75 including the GT.

I have a 75 in my upstairs office that the GT will be living in once I move in a few months. I'll also have an empty 125 set up when I move but I think I'll keep the GT alone in the 75 because hes just fun to mess around with.

I'm with Tig Phish EBJD's are a great choice for a 75, IMHO. Taken care of they can get to a nice size and make for an impressive display. Unfortunately IME they stay relatively delicate even as adults. They won't just up and die for no reason but they are susceptible to disease such as fungal infections. Here's a couple of pics of my old group.
