Several times online I have seen for sale ornates that maxed out below 18" one guy had one for 5 years he was selling that only ever got 14 I was just think if I bought one that was confirmed on the smaller size
I would not. Ornates tend to be quite aggressive especially to other polys.

Also I like to get mine as small as possible to watch them grow and interact with them to let them know I'm not going to hurt them. My ropes are very docile and will let me pick them up almost out of the water. They will eat from my hand and are very inquisitive when I'm doing stuff in the tank. The big female del is also quite tame. The hiders are more "feral" I guess you'd say, the moke is pretty mellow though. The new del in grow out eats from my hand and will bump me to feed him if I'm doing something in the tank. I wish I hadn't rewarded that behavior honestly. It's kind of a pain lol.

Just keep trying. They are young and you are new to them. They usually come around. Will they become hand tame....? Hard to say. Most are food motivated. Get some stinking carnivore pellets (I used stinking on purpose) those smell terrible but polys love them. I started with those and now mine eat whatever I offer.
