75g Filter question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thanks so much. I just got back from the store and saw the same filter for $189+. This really helps out.

I think I'm going to start the tank with this one and the 280 and see how it goes.

3mColorQuartz if it's available near you. If not, Pool filter sand.
Or gravel if he likes. I love the coated smooth pebbles easy vacuuming :)

Good plan. your going with the XP3 right? You were not very specific im curious :)

i've been using xp3 for years on a 46gal bow front and it works great for me keeps my water crystal clear. i'd say get the xp3. the peeps that post on here are right to depends on how much you stock and regular water change..

Yep, I went with the Xp3 :)

I'm debating getting pool filter sand, or crushed coral (if I could find it, so far I've only been able to find one 10lb bag of #4 grade) I even thought about mixing Aragonite sand and moon sand together to get a nice black/white affect.

Can I just get any run of the mill Pool Filter Sand? I don't have to ask for a certain type?

i had an xp3 on my 75g and hated it. i dont feel like it was near enough filtration. slow flow even with the powerjet and no filter floss. GOOD filter, but slow as molasses, good for bio.

get a fluval fx5 off ebay for 200 and be done with it, its way more than the 75g needs, but its nice to have that reassurance. not to mention you can use a butload of bio media because of the size of filter, its rated at 900gph, usually get about 500-600gph out of one. thats about an 8x turnover rate. PERFECT for that tank

im using 3m color quartz t grade, for mine and its sucked up plenty, my fish always blows the sand in it out of its mouth, and kicks it up in it. and it hasnt hurt it at all. theres always plenty of sand in the bottom of the fx5 when i clean it out.

if you plan on heavy stocking DO NOT rely just on the xp3, it is NOT enough in my opinion. ive already been that route.

!!!!!!! edit !!!!!!!!
OOPS, guess you posted while i was typing, hope it works out for you!, good luck.

Hmmm...now I may be leaning towards the XP3 because of the higher flow. I'm a complete n00b when it comes to canisters. So your comments really help!

Do the canisters come with everything I'll need? or do I have to buy attachments?

I like my xp3's. I have 2 of them and 2 ac110's on my 75.

I would go for the pool filter sand, any kind should work. If you are worried about raising the ph then it is better to put some crushed coral in a filter bag and put it in a filter, it works better that way.
